This brilliant video is set to David Foster Wallace’s brilliant commencement speech at Kenyon College in 2005. It was taken down from youtube for awhile and recently got re-uploaded, watch while you can.
My favorite line:
“The real value of an education, which has (almost) nothing to do with knowledge and EVERYTHING to do with awareness.”
The overall purpose of the talk is that higher education is really about the ability to consciously choose how to perceive others, think about meaning, and act appropriately in everyday life. He argues that the true freedom acquired through education is the ability to be adjusted, conscious, and sympathetic.
